This is a brief outline of a Crisis Pregnancy Support Programme being implemented in Saint Lucia. The programme has three components which are being developed and implemented in two phases namely (i) Crisis Pregnancy Support – support for women facing unplanned or crisis pregnancies (ii) Pregnancy Loss Recovery – for women/men who suffer hurt from past abortion experiences and for women/men suffering from pregnancy loss due to miscarriage or still birth.
Background – Why LIFE Pregnancy Support?
Abortion was legalised in Saint Lucia in January 2004. Even prior to its legalisation, abortions were routinely performed. Most women are pressured to have abortions and do not really exercise their own choice when choosing abortion. Women and very young girls have abortions for a number of reasons, including: (i) lack of appreciation or awareness of what the physical act of abortion really involves (ii) lack of awareness of the long term medical complications, and emotional side effects of abortion (iii) societal and family pressure (iv) lack of social, financial, and moral support.
If given accurate information, and provided with adequate care and support, women will generally choose the best and healthiest outcome for themselves and their babies.
Unfortunately, crisis pregnancy advice and support services are not available in Saint Lucia. This means that many, many women have abortions who would have chosen differently if they had had adequate information, care and support.
Support for women facing unplanned or crisis pregnancies
It is very important to defend the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death and to oppose the legalisation of abortion. But, opposing abortion is not enough. An unplanned pregnancy can be a very frightening thing for a woman, much less a young girl. No woman should have to face a pregnancy alone. A woman facing a crisis pregnancy needs care, support, and practical help, which will assist her in making the best decision for herself and her baby.
LIFE Pregnancy Support will provide all necessary support to women facing crisis pregnancies so that they do not feel abandoned and alone at such a vulnerable time in their lives. Services will be provided in a confidential, caring environment.
LIFE will offer:-
